President's Newsletter, August 2014 – The gloves are off

Welcome friends to a somewhat belated August newsletter (my excuse is that I'm desperately hanging onto the last of the summer...). August was something of a thrill at Excalibur Speakers, with a rich and varied Regular meeting in week two followed by an exhilarating outdoor meeting at Speakers' Corner in week 3.

In addition to taking brave steps forward in terms of being aspiring advanced speakers, our club has also bounded forward towards hitting our target for achieving the Smedley Award. We will hopefully have good news to share with you at our Regular meeting next week!

Looking ahead to...

September at Excalibur Speakers

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 10th September, 7pm at the Fitzrovia Community Centre, Foley Street. We will be hosting both the Table Topics Contest and the Humorous Speech Contest, and we have some of the best speakers in London lined up to compete. The gloves are off! Please log into easySpeak to see the full line-up.

September also sees the return of our Thursday lunchtime Speak Out meeting: Thursday, 25th September, 12pm at the Concert Artistes' Association, Bedford Street. Speaking opportunities are available - log into easySpeak to secure your slot.

One further date for your diary is the Area 45 Contest Night, which will be held on Thursday, 2nd October, 6.30pm at Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street. Area Governor Lyn is looking for judges and functionaries for the evening, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. Also, please put it in your diary - it will be a night filled with laughter, for sure!

Distinguished Club Programme

The Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) is Toastmasters International's framework of objectives that clubs should aim to achieve within the Toastmasters year, and different levels of recognition are awarded depending on how many of the ten criteria are met.

  2. Two more Competent Communicator awards: Not yet achieved

  4. One more Advanced Communicator award: Not yet achieved
  5. One leadership award: Peter G (ALB)
  6. One more leadership award: Not yet achieved
  7. Four new members: Tony S, + 3 others (to be announced next week!)
  8. Four more new members: Not yet achieved
  9. At least four club officers trained at each of two training events: Half achieved (Cat, Karthik, Swarajit, Chinkata, Tony W, Ken)
  10. On-time submission of club officer list and membership dues: Part achieved (club officer list submitted on time)
Total 2/10 (+ 2 WIP)

Please let me know if you would like mentoring or support to help you to achieve your Toastmasters goals for this year, which will in turn help us achieve our goals as a club.

The Final Word

With contest season upon us, the gloves are off at Excalibur Speakers. That said, it is still done in the warm, friendly boundaries of Toastmasters!
Most of all, I want you to have an evening full of joy, laughter and success.
"Live daringly, boldly, fearlessly. Taste the relish to be found in competition - in having put forth the best within you."

Best wishes,

Cat Kipling
President, Excalibur Speakers
