Presidents Newsletter, November 2015

It has been a busy and exciting month at Excalibur Speakers. We have now moved to two meetings a month which means so much more opportunity for our members to improve their skills.

Beyond this, your committee is working on many more initiatives. Each is intended to improve the experience for you, our members.

Will you achieve a competent communicator award this year? If so, can Excalibur get credit for it?

As you may be aware, under Immediate Past President Cat's leadership, Excalibur Speakers achieved Presidents Distinguished Club in 2014-15. This is the highest award possible for a club to achieve and shows the success of the club last year.

This year your committee are keen to achieve Presidents Distinguished again. While we can see where the necessary awards are generally going to come from, we are short 2 Competent Communicator awards. As President, I have agreed to contribute one CC award but we need another. Are you going to achieve a CC this year? If so, would you be willing to donate it to Excalibur? If you are able to help please let me know.

Let me know about your speaking events

Excalibur members are a talented bunch. I regularly hear about the amazing things that you are doing with the skills you learn at our club. And I would like everyone else to hear about them too. So, please let me know of any notable speaking engagements or leadership activities you have recently been involved in and how your Toastmasters experience has helped you. My hope is to mention these at future meetings and that they can act as an inspiration to our newer members.

Mentoring

I am sure many of our members have, over the years, benefited from mentoring. Yet Excalibur has no formal mentoring programme. I think we should consider adopting some form of mentoring programme. With this in mind please let me know by the end of the year your thoughts on mentoring, what has worked for you in the past as well as what hasn't, and what you would like to see in any Excalibur mentoring programme. I will then, early next year, discuss with the committee any comments that I get.

Special Event

Your committee believe the club could be more of a beacon for the Advanced Manuals within the Toastmasters community. As such, we are planning an event to educate members of other clubs about these manuals. We envisage maybe a short speech or two from experienced Excalibur members talking about The Route to Distinguished Toastmaster and maybe a speech on tips on how to get the most out of these manuals. The main thrust, however, would be to give a chance for members of other clubs to read the manuals and talk to Excalibur members about their experience of working through those manuals. We are still trying to finalise a date for this but if you would like to help with this event, please let me know.

George Chiesa DTM

One of the big pleasures this month was to award George Chiesa with his Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) plaque. George has been, over the years, a star member of Toastmasters. He has, as President and Area Governor brought our organisation new clubs, raised standards at existing clubs, and encouraged many members. Alongside this, George has continued to work through his educational awards and now has deservedly achieved his DTM award. We have all seen how he has grown as he has worked towards this award. Well done George.

Sue M appointed as Sergeant at Arms

I am really happy to announce that Sue M has agreed to be our club's new Sergeant at Arms. Sue will help with setting the room up and pulling it down at the end to the meeting. She will also bring her charm to welcoming guests to the club. I know she will be a valuable member of our committee. Please note that Sue is only one person and if we all help with these tasks then her job will be made much easier!
